Since 2014, the second Saturday of October we host our annual frag swap event. The "swap" is the primary fund raiser for our club. The history of these type of events across the country emerged as a way to bring together like-minded hobbyists where they would and buy, sell, trade, or swap unique "frag" pieces of coral. Over the years swaps have become more of an "expo" where clubs or professional organizers bring in coral growers, fish, dry goods, or equipment from a region and invite the public to shop. It is common to "barter" for deals.
Big Blue Reef Club is proud to partner with our current venue where we support a reef display tank for Locust Trace AgriScience Center. The school is a career and technical high school in Lexington Kentucky with agriculture being the educational focus. The facility is designed to be net-zero in energy through the used of photovoltaic solar panels and net-zero in waste disposal through constructed wetlands around the property. Rain water is collected from the buildings to supplement an on property well to provide the equine barn/arena, crop irrigation, and livestock watering.
Other elements of our swap include:
- Free entry for members, $5 entry for non-members
- Raffle items for vendors and often other unique hobby components such as Rock, Lights, Aquarium Controllers, Foods, Supplements and more.
- An Awesome Food Truck
- Ample space
- Ample parking
